Like most of us…

I was hooked on books as a kid. For me, it was a way to escape the reality of waiting for all the adults in my life to do their important stuff.

It was good practice for becoming a writer and agent.

Nearly every day, I went to the library of the elementary school where my mom worked. The librarian was one of my best friends and had a huge impact on my love of books. She always encouraged me to try something new. A poetry book. A biography. We’d read the new picture books together before shelving them.

One thing all of my favorite books had in common was a hero who might’ve made mistakes but tried to be a good person and succeeded in some way by the end. By the time I was nine, I’d read all of Anne McCaffrey’s stunning books about Pern. By the time I was ten, I’d read them twice more. I loved Terry Brooks, Judy Blume, Dr. Suess, Shel Silverstein, Gary Paulson, Roald Dahl, Lord Byron, Orson Scott Card, Beverly Cleary, Dean Koontz.

I’ve never been good with super scary stuff. My imagination is too vivid, and I never totally lost the ability to separate reality from fiction in the moment.

It’s a blessing and a curse. But I can’t handle a lot of terror or gore. The only Stephen King book I could ever get through (but I loved it) was The Stand.

My favorite picture book is Dooly and the Snortsnoot by Jack Kent. I’d love to see this as a middle grade novel and might write it for myself if I don’t get it as a submission.

Many of my current loves can’t be on here yet because they’re my mentees’ or clients’ books that have been sold but not announced yet or are currently on submission. And there are so many wonderful books out there that have been published that I haven’t read! It breaks my brain to think about all those books I want to read and don’t have enough time.

My usual favorites are commercial fiction with a decent dose of literary fiction. I’m building my MG, YA, and Adult lists–give me anything with voice and strong characters and a world that takes me away.

I love books by Pierce Brown, Leigh Bardugo, Rainbow Rowell, Maggie Stiefvater, Holly Black and…Hullmetal Girls by Emily Skrutski, Words on Bathroom Walls by Julia Walton, Sadie by Courtney Summers, Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyami, The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert, Dear Evan Hansen by Val Emmich, Devils Unto Dust by Emma Berquist, Gunslinger Girl by Lyndsay Ely, The Beauty That Remains by Ashley Woodfolk, and, of course, this list could go on to be a whole post or a few.

So…I’d love to see your submission!

If you think you might be a good fit for me, please use the following guidelines.

I only take submissions via this online form.

It will require you to answer some questions and paste in pages. Links to social media platforms are appreciated.

For non-fiction, please include social media links and relevant information for your platform in the proposal, which should also include the first three sample chapters.

Please send one project/proposal at a time. If interested, I’ll contact you for the full. Please, don’t send any more information for this project than what has been requested, especially if I’ve passed on your original submission. No reply to a rejection is needed. If you’ve made significant rewrites on a manuscript and it still fits my updated wish lists, you can resubmit it after six months.
